An Unlikely Chapel, An Unforgettable Story

16 months in a federal prison chapel in Pensacola, FL became the crucible for Jason Made's career. It was there he wrote nearly 40 original songs.

"Jason's music shaped so many men's time while at Pensacola, mine especially... The talent that Jason has, the world needs to see and hear as there is healing that occurs when he sings."

Official Bio

The story of the artist JASON MADE is a study in the potent and often contradictory forces that shape an American life. It is a narrative of extraordinary musical talent rooted in the sacred soil of the Southern Black church, of ambition forged in the shadow of scarcity, and of a profound reinvention that took place in the most secular of crucibles: a federal prison. His journey reveals a foundational theme: the capacity for alchemy, for transforming trauma and failure into a source of disciplined creation.

Raised in Fairhope, Alabama, Jason’s formative years were steeped in a world of close-knit family and the vibrant musicality of the church. A childhood accident and the long, solitary recovery that followed became a pivotal period of development, where a second-hand spinet organ and a church hymn book taught him the power of disciplined practice. Mentored by Pastor Romie Harris, Jason honed his skills, began writing his own songs, and even sold his first recordings on cassette tapes around the neighborhood.

As he matured, however, the ambition that fueled his music led him down a path of compounding decisions, culminating in a federal conviction and a thirty-month prison sentence. He entered the facility not with a sense of finality, but with a clear mission of self-reconstruction. In the prison chapel, granted access to a piano by the crucial largess of Chaplain Dixon, he wrote constantly, filling a notebook gifted by a fellow inmate with the lyrics and melodies of more than forty new songs. It was through this disciplined act of creation that he shed his old identity and adopted his new one: JASON MADE.

Since his 2024 release, he has returned to Fairhope to a life of quiet responsibility—and leading the Path To Peace community choir. The artist who has emerged is a sophisticated synthesist, his sound a rich tapestry of his influences—from the gospel of The Clark Sisters and the sanctified rock of Little Richard to the genius of Prince and the atmospheric textures of The Cocteau Twins. His ultimate ambition is no longer tied to conventional success, but to a mission of connection, a belief that a story of profound failure can be transformed into a sound that helps others feel understood.

Lyrics

I really want to be made over
I just want to be left free
If it didn't burn up in the fire
If it's leftover it's me
I've been put through all the paces
And I've come through how I am
It took this long just to find out
It's the makings of a man
